Building Confidence and Creativity: A Stitch in Time During STEM

When you learn something for the first time, it often doesn’t stick until you get hands-on with it. That’s why, we love combining different subjects into engaging experiences that allow students to dive in and explore!

This week, our middle school students took a creative spin in STEM by making ghosts to go along with The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason. Under the guidance of Miss Dione, the students selected their own fabric, stitched on button eyes, and stuffed their unique ghosts, bringing the story to life through hands-on exploration.

Our teachers did a phenomenal job empowering students and highlighting the importance of creativity in STEM fields. They experienced how literacy can be seamlessly integrated into various subjects, fostering a holistic approach to learning.

This truly captures the heart of teaching!

By creating engaging academic content through interactive opportunities, she allowed students to forge meaningful connections with their education.

This project is a fantastic activity for parents and families to try at home together! Crafting your own ghost while discussing the story encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and a sense of accomplishment. Whether you're a seasoned sewer or a beginner, this project is a wonderful way to bond and learn with one another.

At Hickory Hill Academy, we take pride in fostering a learning environment where subjects connect and reinforce one another. Hands-on projects like this not only inspire curiosity and creativity but also allow students to apply what they’ve learned in a fun and enriching way. Engaging in such activities encourages empathy and collaboration, helping our students grow into capable leaders.

Want to try this at home?

  • Choose fabric (scraps from home work great!).

  • Help your child sew button eyes and stitch the fabric together.

  • Stuff your ghost with cotton or other materials you have on hand.

  • Enjoy creating, learning, and sharing stories together!

Encourage creativity, collaboration, and cross-curricular learning—because education is most powerful when it’s fun and hands-on!
