At Hickory Hill Academy, we believe that learning happens best when it engages the whole child—mind, body, and heart. This week, our Time of Wonder (TOW) toddler class embarked on a multi-sensory journey, discovering the world through their five senses.
During a painting activity, our young learners were asked, "Do you see what color this is?" as they explored our colors of the week—pink and purple. But this wasn't your average painting lesson!
Our teachers added sand to the paint, creating a gritty texture that engaged their sense of touch. We also infused the paint with a burst of lemon extract, making it a feast for their sense of smell. And as they painted, the brushes jingled, allowing the children to delight in the sound of their creativity.
This sensory-rich activity is just one example of how we connect hands-on learning with compassionate leadership. At HHA, we see compassion as the heart of education—teaching children to care deeply for themselves, others, and the world around them. These early experiences with sensory learning help develop empathy.
As children become more attuned to their surroundings, they also become more aware of the feelings, perspectives, and needs of others.
