Why Do I Teach? Featuring Ms. Lauren

Updated: Oct 5

At Hickory Hill Academy, our vision is all about cultivating compassionate leaders. Through our values of campus, community, and curriculum, we strive to inspire a love for learning and develop empathetic, selfless individuals who can make a difference in the world. One way we bring this to life is by sharing the stories of our incredible teachers, giving families a glimpse into the passion behind what we do. This month, we're excited to introduce you to Ms. Lauren and her “Why I Teach” story.

Why Do I Teach?

"I am proud to be in my 21st year as an educator, a journey that has brought so much joy and fulfillment. Truthfully, I didn’t think I would end up spending my life in schools. My mom was a special education/early childhood teacher, and in my youthful determination to carve my own path, I initially pursued journalism. However, throughout college, I found myself constantly working with children—as a swim coach, tutor, and babysitter. People often told me I had a natural connection with kids, but because I didn’t enjoy my own school experience, I couldn’t imagine making a career of it.

The turning point came when I realized that kids are the best of us.

They are open, curious, loving, adventurous, and wonderfully accepting. As a classroom teacher, I’ve always been determined to set the bar high and make school a fun, enriching place. It’s such a privilege to follow my students on their academic journeys and even more rewarding to stay connected with many of them long after they’ve left my classroom. Seeing their success in and outside of school continues to be a source of pride and joy.

As I move forward in my career, I’m eager to use my experience to inspire and support a new generation of educators. I believe deeply in the power of teaching, and I’m honored to continue contributing to the lives of children and families in this community."

Ms. Lauren's story is a wonderful reflection of the heart and dedication that make our school special. It’s teachers like her who embody our vision of cultivating compassionate leaders, creating a positive and lasting impact through their commitment to campus, community, and curriculum.
